What should I feed my kitten?

At 12 weeks your kitten should be eating solid food and should be fed to appetite as much as they want.

We believe the best way to feed a kitten is with a diet that their bodies were designed to consume. As your cat is a carnivore, this means meat from protein (not cereals and grains) and essential vitamins from vegetables and fruits. This will support essential brain, bone and teeth development as part of overall health.

All Applaws recipes have been carefully crafted with natural ingredients. We only use the finest cuts of chicken or fish in our wet food products and the only vitamins and minerals in the product are those which exist naturally. Our dry food contains extremely high levels of meat at 50% of the recipe and is cereal and grain free.

We recommend the best way to reproduce your cat’s natural diet in pre-prepared food is by feeding a complete dry food alongside a complementary wet food. We suggest a ratio of 60% wet complementary food to 40% dry complete food for a diet brimming with nutrition. Your kitten may like to have up to 8 smaller meals a day and some of these may be in the middle of the night! We recommend a bowl of Applaws complete dry food be left out 24 hours a day. You can then top up throughout the day using Applaws wet cat food. The essential amino acids which a kitten needs every day from their food, such as taurine, comes from meat which is naturally occurring in the prime meat and fish fillets we use in the Applaws wet cat food range.

Also, be sure to always leave fresh water out for your kitten.

If your cat has special requirements or you are unsure about any aspect of feeding your cat, we always recommend you consult with your vet.

Does Applaws cat food contain Taurine?

Taurine is an essential amino acid that cats need for optimum health and is only found in animal-based proteins, i.e. meat. Many cat foods have to add taurine into their recipes as there is very little actual meat in their food. We do not add taurine to Applaws wet cat food as with up to 80% prime meat content, it is naturally occurring. This is why you will not find taurine on our ingredients list. We always recommend that our complementary wet foods are fed alongside complete and balanced grain free cat food to ensure your cat has a diet packed with the nutrition they need to thrive.

Can I feed Applaws to my older cat?

All Applaws cat food recipes are suitable for senior cats. As our food contains high levels of naturally occurring protein, vitamins and minerals, cats of any breed and lifestage can thrive on an Applaws diet.

If your cat has special requirements or you are unsure about any aspect of feeding, we always recommend you consult with your vet.

Why grain free cat food?

When our founders started Applaws, they identified that most commercial pet foods contain high levels of cereals and grains which are cheap and filling but not necessarily beneficial to the health of our cats.  They can cause allergies, itching and digestive issues. While cats are able to tolerate some level of grain, they are carnivores and their bodies are at their healthiest when they get their protein from meat and not cereals. For this reason, we decided to make Applaws dry cat food grain free. The main source of protein in Applaws cat food is meat and we create our recipes to replicate, as closely as possible, your pet’s natural diet so they can thrive.

Is Applaws cat food gluten free?

Yes it is. Gluten from cereals and grains can sometimes cause problems such as skin allergies in some cat. Applaws grain free dry cat food is particularly suitable for cats that suffer from gluten intolerance. Our wet cat food contains a maximum of 4% rice but it’s worth noting that rice does not contain gluten.

How much should I feed my cat?

As a general guide, we suggest you feed your cat a bowl of complete dry cat food morning and evening along with a complementary wet meal, such as Applaws Cat Tins, in the morning and one in the evening.

For a diet packed with nutrition and taste, we recommend a ratio of 60% wet complementary food to 40% dry complete food.

Please consult the individual product feeding guides featured on our product pages. All recommendations act as a guide and will depend on the age, activity level and general health of your cat. If your cat has special requirements or you are unsure about any aspect of feeding, we always recommend you consult with your vet.

Lastly, always make sure you always leave fresh water out for your cat.

What is the difference between complete food and complementary food?

Often referred to as “complete and balanced”, complete food, such as Applaws dry, is formulated to contain all the vitamins and minerals your pet needs to be healthy. If your pet is fed nothing but a complete food alongside water, they will receive the nutrition their body needs.

Complementary pet foods are not designed to be the only source of food for your pet but they are a great way to add variety, flavour and a boost of essential vitamins. At Applaws, our 100% natural wet complementary recipes contain real meat and fish fillet. These prime cuts provide your pet with naturally high levels of vitamins, taurine and arginine which help your pet to thrive when fed alongside a complete food.

We recommend a ratio of 60% wet complementary food to 40% dry complete food for balanced nutrition.

For cats we recommend giving a complementary wet meal in the morning and one in the evening. Give your cat a bowl of Applaws grain free natural cat food during the day and in the evening.

How do I switch my cat’s food to Applaws?

It’s important to introduce any new food to your cat gradually over a period of 7-10 days. Sudden changes in diet can result in an upset stomach or digestive issues so transitioning bit by bit is key. Applaws dry cat food is a high protein, grain free cat food which your cat will love but will need to adjust to, depending on what they have been fed previously. It is not uncommon to see evidence of loose stools within this transitional period but over time you should start to see dark, firm stools which indicates a healthy digestive system.

Is Applaws pet food gluten free?

Yes it is. Gluten from cereals and grains can sometimes cause problems such as skin allergies in some pets. Applaws complete dry is particularly suitable for pets that suffer from gluten intolerance. Our wet food contains a maximum of 4% rice but it’s worth noting that rice does not contain gluten.
