Can Cats Eat Watermelon?

Can Cats Eat Watermelon?

Cats can eat small amounts of watermelon flesh, but only occasionally. Seeds and rind should be avoided, and watermelon offers no real nutritional benefit for cats.

It’s a common summer occurrence… you’re cutting into a slice of watermelon, and your curious cat suddenly appears to investigate.

So, can cats eat watermelon? In short: yes. But only in small amounts, and only the flesh.

Watermelon isn’t toxic to cats, but there are a few things to be aware of before sharing a slice.

Is Watermelon Safe for Cats?

Yes, watermelon flesh is generally safe for cats in small amounts.

However, some parts should always be avoided:

  • Seeds: can cause digestive issues or blockages
  • Rind (skin): tough to chew and difficult to digest

If you do offer watermelon, it should always be:

  • Seedless
  • Rind removed
  • Cut into small, manageable pieces

Can Cats Digest Watermelon Properly?

Cats can cope with small amounts, but fruit isn’t something their bodies are designed for.

Watermelon is:

  • High in natural sugar
  • Not nutritionally necessary for cats

Because cats are obligate carnivores, their diet should be centred around meat rather than fruit.

So, while a tiny taste is unlikely to harm them, it doesn’t add anything beneficial either.

Why Do Some Cats Like Watermelon?

Not all cats will be interested, but some are drawn to:

  • The texture
  • The moisture content
  • The novelty!

This curiosity is completely normal. Cats often investigate unfamiliar foods, even if they don’t actually want to eat them.

How Much Watermelon Can Cats Eat?

If your cat is interested, only offer a very small amount.

A bite or two of watermelon is more than enough for cats.

Too much can cause:

  • Upset stomach
  • Loose stools

Watermelon should always be an occasional treat, not part of their regular diet.
